Zelensky and Trump Agree to Boost Ukraine’s Air Defence Amid Uncertainty Over US Military Aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Friday that he and US President Donald Trump have agreed to cooperate on strengthening Ukraine’s air defences. Zelensky shared the update on social media following a phone conversation with Trump, stating, “We spoke about opportunities in air defence and agreed that we will work together to strengthen protection of our skies.”

The statement comes at a critical time as Kyiv faces growing concerns over the continuity and reliability of US military aid, which has been a key pillar of Ukraine’s resistance against Russia’s full-scale invasion. Recent reports have suggested that the US has paused certain weapons deliveries to Ukraine, raising fears of weakened defence capabilities against Russian missile and drone attacks targeting critical infrastructure and civilians.

Ukraine has consistently urged Western allies for enhanced air defence systems, including Patriot batteries and advanced anti-missile interceptors, to counter Russia’s frequent long-range strikes. Zelensky’s call with Trump signals a diplomatic effort to secure concrete commitments, particularly as Ukraine braces for intensified Russian offensives this summer.

However, details of the new cooperation agreement remain unclear. The Ukrainian president did not specify whether the US would resume paused deliveries or provide additional defence systems beyond existing commitments. Analysts suggest the announcement is aimed at reassuring both domestic and international audiences of ongoing US support amid an evolving security and political landscape.

Trump, meanwhile, has faced criticism for his administration’s recent decision to halt the delivery of Patriot interceptors and other critical weapons to Ukraine, reportedly to prioritise US stockpiles and readiness. While the White House has denied any intention to abandon Ukraine, the pause has sparked diplomatic unease in Kyiv.

Zelensky’s proactive outreach reflects Ukraine’s urgent need to bolster air defences and maintain strategic deterrence as Russia escalates aerial attacks targeting power grids, ports, and urban centres.
