US Opens Student Visa Applications with Strict Guidelines; Highlights India’s Strategic Role

The US government has begun accepting applications for student visas, bringing hope to thousands aiming for higher education in American universities. However, Deputy State Department Spokesperson Mignon Houston emphasized that these visas must be used responsibly, NDTV reported.

“We give national security the utmost importance in our visa policy. We will not tolerate any student abusing their visa, creating chaos on campus, or pursuing any other purpose in the name of their studies,” Houston said, highlighting that a visa represents not just access to the US but also moral responsibility, behavior, and honest academic purpose.

She stressed the US wants students who “come to study, leave having learned, and not be part of any kind of chaos or violence,” underlining the need to protect campus safety and maintain a constructive learning environment.

Houston also spoke about India’s critical role in US strategic policy, calling India a central pillar of the Indo-Pacific region and essential for the Quad’s stability. This aligns with President Donald Trump’s statement on Tuesday, where he said a new trade deal with India is on the horizon, aiming for fairness and lower tariffs to ensure proper access for American companies.

NDTV noted that as the US opens its doors to students, its ties with India are strengthening on multiple fronts—visas, trade, and strategic partnerships—marking an era of multifaceted cooperation.
