UGC to Oversee 7 Dhaka Colleges Until ‘Dhaka Central University’ Launches

Until the proposed ‘Dhaka Central University’ becomes operational, the University Grants Commission (UGC) will supervise the activities of seven government colleges in Dhaka.

As part of this interim arrangement, Professor AKM Elias, the recently retired principal of Dhaka College, has been appointed as administrator on a two-year contractual basis. The interim headquarters will be located at Dhaka College, UGC member Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan confirmed on Sunday, May 18.

The seven colleges—Dhaka College, Eden Women’s College, Begum Badrunnesa Government College, Government Bangla College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Titumir College, and Government Shahid Suhrawardy College—were affiliated with Dhaka University in 2017.

The government plans to integrate them under the new university structure, with a hybrid model (40% online, 60% in-person) and faculty-based campuses. However, legal and administrative processes will delay its official launch.

In response, students have issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding an immediate gazette notification for forming the interim governing body and have threatened peaceful demonstrations if their demands are not met.
