U.S. Envoy Signals NATO May Halt Expansion in Eastern Europe Over Russian Security Concerns

NATO may pause the inclusion of new Eastern European countries due to U.S. concerns about provoking Russia, U.S. Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg said in an interview with ABC News. Citing Russia’s national security sensitivities, Kellogg acknowledged that Moscow’s objections extend beyond Ukraine to nations like Georgia and Moldova.

“We’ve said Ukraine joining NATO is not on the table,” Kellogg stated, emphasizing that the U.S. is not alone in this stance. He suggested that although up to four more countries could potentially be considered for NATO membership, unanimous approval from all 32 member states would be required.

Kellogg also acknowledged that Russia’s concerns about NATO’s eastward expansion are “justified” and hinted that the issue could become part of broader negotiations between the U.S. and Russia. Any proposed changes would first be reviewed by the U.S. president and discussed among NATO allies.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that a second round of peace talks with Ukraine is scheduled for June 2 in Istanbul, where Russia plans to present a memorandum addressing the roots of the ongoing conflict.
