Police have arrested two individuals for allegedly creating fake social media accounts using the names and photos of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and his younger brother Mirza Faisal Amin to commit fraud and extortion.
The arrests were made during separate raids on Saturday, May 24, in Nilphamari’s Dimla upazila and Tangail’s Dighulia upazila. The accused—Shahidul Islam and Haider Rahman—were taken into custody following two cases filed at Thakurgaon Police Station. On Sunday, May 25, the court granted a three-day remand for one suspect and two days for the other.
According to police, the fraudsters created fake Facebook and WhatsApp accounts in the names of Mirza Fakhrul and Faisal Amin. They allegedly used these accounts to solicit bribes from BNP supporters by falsely promising party nominations, political positions, and lobbying services ahead of the parliamentary elections.
Officer-in-Charge Sarwar Alam Khan confirmed that the suspects had been targeting BNP leaders across various regions. Investigations are ongoing to identify others possibly involved in the scam.
