Turkey has uncovered a significant new natural gas reserve in the Black Sea that is expected to supply the country’s residential energy needs for more than three years, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on Saturday.
“We have discovered 75 billion cubic meters of new natural gas. This amount will be sufficient to meet household energy demands for approximately 3.5 years,” Erdoğan said during a public statement.
He estimated the value of the reserve at around $30 billion and credited the discovery to drilling operations at the Goktepe-3 well, which began on March 27 using Turkey’s state-of-the-art seventh-generation drilling ship, Abdulhamid Han.
Despite this breakthrough, Turkey remains heavily reliant on energy imports. However, Erdoğan reaffirmed the government’s long-term commitment to achieving energy self-sufficiency.
“We will press forward relentlessly—undeterred by criticism or challenges—until we fulfill our vision of a fully energy-independent Turkey,” he asserted.
