U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that Putin is “playing with fire” following the latest breakdown in ceasefire negotiations with Ukraine. The remarks, made on Trump’s platform Truth Social on May 27, follow a weekend of heavy Russian attacks—the largest since the war began.
Trump cryptically stated, “If I weren’t here, really bad things would have happened to Russia,” without specifying further. The comments come as Trump reportedly considers imposing new sanctions on Moscow, with the White House confirming that all options remain on the table.
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt blamed the ongoing war on President Joe Biden’s leadership and reiterated that Trump supports a negotiated peace. Over the weekend, Trump also described Putin as “completely crazy” and warned that Russia’s attempt to seize all of Ukraine could ultimately lead to its own collapse.
As tensions escalate and ceasefire efforts falter, Trump’s strong words and potential policy shifts signal a hardening stance against Russia in the evolving conflict.
