U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday (May 12) that he is likely to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping by the end of the week, following recent progress in trade negotiations between the two countries.
The statement came after Washington and Beijing agreed to a 90-day reduction in tariffs after several rounds of diplomatic talks in Switzerland. “The talks in Geneva were very friendly. The relationship is very… very good. I’ll probably talk to President Xi at the end of the week,” Trump told reporters.
As part of the agreement reached in Switzerland, both nations committed to establishing a formal framework to continue negotiations aimed at strengthening economic and trade ties. Future talks may be held in China, the U.S., or a neutral third country.
China was represented by Vice Premier He Lifeng, while the U.S. delegation included Treasury Secretary Scott Besant and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
