Former U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as the Republican candidate for the 2026 Senate midterm elections in North Carolina. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Trump praised Lara as a “wonderful person,” emphasizing her North Carolina roots despite her current residence in Florida.
Lara Trump, married to Eric Trump, was co-chair of the Republican National Committee during the 2024 presidential campaign and currently hosts My View with Lara Trump on Fox News.
The nomination comes amid Trump’s dissatisfaction with North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, who voted against Trump’s proposed tax reform and immigration bill in the Senate on Tuesday. Trump reportedly decided to replace Tillis with Lara as the party’s candidate in response to his vote. The bill, which includes tax cuts for the wealthy and health insurance cuts for the poor, will now move to the House of Representatives for approval.
