Trump Dismisses Elon Musk from Administration Amid Rising Tensions and Policy Clashes

U.S. President Donald Trump announced the dismissal of Elon Musk from his administration during a press conference at the Oval Office on Friday (May 30), marking the end of a controversial yet impactful chapter in his second-term governance. Musk, who was present at the event, was praised by Trump for his contributions but ultimately stepped down amid growing political and public pressure.

Appointed as head of the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DoG) after Trump’s 2024 re-election, Musk spearheaded drastic cost-cutting measures that included mass layoffs, suspension of foreign aid, and defunding domestic research organizations. While these moves aligned with the department’s mission to eliminate government waste, they triggered lawsuits, widespread backlash, and a sharp dip in Trump’s popularity.

Internal friction escalated after Musk publicly criticized a recently signed “big and beautiful” spending bill that included tax cuts and increased defense funding. Musk argued the bill contradicted DoG’s mission and undermined months of efforts to streamline government spending.

Despite the fallout, Trump acknowledged Musk’s significant role in implementing rapid administrative reforms and hinted that their professional relationship might continue in other capacities. Musk, who expressed a desire to return to his businesses—Tesla, SpaceX, and X—stated, “The DoG team has shown tremendous success, and I believe it will continue to thrive.”

The Department of Government Efficiency remains unrecognized by Congress, and Musk’s departure underscores ongoing tensions within the Trump administration as it balances aggressive reforms with political realities.
