Amid ongoing student demonstrations, the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, and Treasurer of Barishal University (BU) have been removed from their positions by order of the President.
The dismissed officials are Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Shuchita Sharmin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Golam Rabbani, and Treasurer Professor Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid. Their removal was announced Tuesday night through a formal notification signed by A.S.M. Kashem, Senior Assistant Secretary of the General Universities Branch under the Ministry of Education’s Secondary and Higher Education Division.
In the same announcement, Professor Dr. Toufik Alam, a faculty member of the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Rajshahi University, was appointed as the interim Vice-Chancellor of Barishal University.
Additional notifications from the Ministry of Education confirmed that Dr. Shuchita Sharmin has been granted permission to return to her previous role at the Department of Development Studies at Dhaka University. Dr. Golam Rabbani has also been directed to rejoin Dhaka University, while Dr. Mamun Ur Rashid will resume duties at Patuakhali Science and Technology University.
Following the administrative shake-up, 12 students who had been on a hunger strike demanding the removal of the Vice-Chancellor ended their protest.
