Taylor Fritz Battles Through Gruelling Five-Setter to Reach Wimbledon Third Round

Fifth seed Taylor Fritz advanced to the third round at Wimbledon after a hard-fought five-set victory over Canada’s Gabriel Diallo on Wednesday. Fritz won 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0), 4-6, 6-3 in a three-hour, six-minute battle, marking his second consecutive five-set match at the tournament.

The American, who won the Eastbourne title last week, has played 109 games in two rounds, the third-most by a male player at Wimbledon since 2022. Fritz, known for his strong forehand chip returns against big servers, faced challenges throughout, including drawing blood while diving for a forehand in the fourth set, requiring a medical timeout.

Reflecting on the match, Fritz said, “That’s an incredibly hard match… I was going to have to play near-perfect when I got my opportunities. Really happy to get through.” After competing three consecutive days, Fritz will now enjoy a well-earned rest before his next match.
