BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has criticized the interim government’s failure to announce a specific date for the national election over the past 10 months, calling the delay a cause of political uncertainty. Speaking virtually at a discussion marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman on May 29, Tarique emphasized that necessary reforms could be completed in time to hold elections before December, as most political parties have already reached consensus on key issues.
He urged the interim government to align with the people’s democratic aspirations and immediately set a clear election date within December. He argued that doing so would not be a defeat for the interim government, but rather a win for democracy.
Tarique also expressed concern over the government’s lack of accountability and its disconnect from the public, noting that many advisors are unaware of citizens’ daily struggles. He warned that continued delay in reforms and elections risks deepening the country’s economic instability and weakening public trust.
Other BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and senior standing committee members, echoed Tarique’s concerns. They called for swift action to restore democratic governance through free and fair elections.
