The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has scheduled June 1 for its verdict on Jamaat-e-Islami’s appeal to regain its registration as a political party. The decision follows extensive legal arguments presented before a four-member bench led by Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed.
Jamaat’s legal team, including Senior Advocate Ehsan Siddique and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir, challenged the 2013 High Court ruling that declared the party’s Election Commission registration invalid—a decision later enforced through a 2018 gazette. Although the Appellate Division dismissed Jamaat’s initial appeal in 2023 due to the absence of counsel, it reinstated the case in October 2024, allowing a renewed hearing.
The case carries significant political implications. A ruling in favor of Jamaat could pave the way for the party’s return to electoral politics, following years of legal and administrative exclusion. The court’s decision also comes in the wake of a brief government-imposed ban in August 2024, which was later reversed, adding further weight to the upcoming judgment.
