The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has reinstated the political party registration of Jamaat-e-Islami, overturning a 2013 High Court ruling that had declared the party’s registration illegal. The verdict was delivered on Sunday morning, June 1, by a four-member bench led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed. The Election Commission has been directed to implement the order without delay.
Jamaat was represented in court by a team of lawyers including Barristers Ehsan and Imran Abdullah Siddique, Shishir Monir, Najib Momen, and Mir Ahmed Bin Kashem. Following the ruling, Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed gratitude on Facebook, writing “Alhamdulillah.”
During the appeal, the EC’s lawyer confirmed that the party’s former election symbol—the scales—had been removed from the official list based on a Supreme Court administrative decision. While Jamaat’s legal team argued for its reinstatement, the court did not issue a ruling on the symbol.
Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration was originally canceled by the EC in 2018 following the 2013 High Court verdict. With the Supreme Court’s latest decision, the party can now resume political activities under official registration.
