Mohammad Hossain, a first-year economics student at Jagannath University, who was accused of throwing a plastic bottle at Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuz Alam, has been released into the custody of his family after being questioned by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. DMP’s Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed that the student was interrogated and later handed over to his guardians on Friday afternoon.
A photo of Hossain with Adviser Mahfuz Alam and family members was later shared from the adviser’s official Facebook account, which also noted the adviser’s personal request to the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure the student’s release. Adviser Alam further invited Hossain to visit his home after the protests end and assured that a government roadmap addressing the student housing crisis at Jagannath University would be released soon.
The student’s release followed public pressure, as protesters had warned of surrounding the DB office if punitive measures were taken without proper investigation.
