As beef and mutton prices surge in Dhaka’s retail markets, broiler chicken has become the primary meat choice for middle- and lower-income families. A visit to Kawran Bazar on May 30 revealed beef selling at Tk 750–800 per kg and mutton at Tk 1,100 per kg, forcing many to turn to broiler chicken priced at Tk 160–170 per kg.
Golden chicken prices have also declined by Tk 20 per kg, while local chicken remains costly at Tk 550–600 per kg. Buyers say beef is now out of reach, with one mother noting, “Chicken is the only affordable option for my family.”
Vendors anticipate a possible rise in chicken prices ahead of Eid-ul-Azha if demand spikes further. Experts warn that without increased government oversight, the rising costs of meat and fish could threaten the food security of lower- and middle-class households.
