Sigourney Weaver Says ‘Galaxy Quest’ Should Have Stayed R-Rated, Mourns Lost Director’s Cut and Sequel

Reflecting on her career, Sigourney Weaver says she wishes the cult-favorite sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest had stuck to its original, edgier vision. In a recent video interview, Weaver said the film was initially conceived with more sophisticated, adult material that was ultimately trimmed when the studio opted to position it as a family-friendly release.

Weaver said she felt a deep connection to her character Gwen—an actress sidelined and objectified in a cheesy space TV series—finding more resonance there than with her iconic turn as Ripley in Alien. She described Gwen as a woman desperate to be taken seriously in an industry that reduces her to looks, noting a sense of “compassion and sisterhood” with both Gwen and the fictional role she plays within the movie.

The actress praised her co-stars, including Tim Allen, Tony Shalhoub, and the late Alan Rickman, and lamented that many of Rickman’s most unusual and nuanced scenes were cut. Weaver said she has long hoped for a director’s cut restoring that material, explaining that DreamWorks softened the film to compete with Stuart Little.

She also addressed the sequel that never materialized, revealing that co-writer Bob Gordon had written a follow-up script but refused to hand it over, believing the studio mishandled the original release. Plans for a sequel faded entirely after Rickman’s death from pancreatic cancer in 2016, a loss Weaver said took the heart out of continuing the story.

Directed by Dean Parisot, Galaxy Quest parodies and celebrates shows like Star Trek, following washed-up TV actors mistakenly recruited by aliens who believe their fictional adventures are real. While film sequels have stalled, producer Mark Johnson has said a Galaxy Quest television series is currently in development at CBS Studios, keeping the beloved franchise alive—if in a different form.
