A group of protesters operating under the banner of ‘Anti-Fascist Students and Public’ began demolishing a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Rangamati town on Friday (May 16). The demolition reportedly began around 5 PM in the Upazila Parishad area of the district.
Prior to the incident, around 3 PM, demonstrators marched from Bhede Bazar and gathered in front of the server station, raising slogans against what they described as symbols of authoritarianism.
Participants in the protest stated that their actions were part of a broader movement to “erase all signs of fascism from the country.” They declared that the removal of the statue in Rangamati marked the beginning of this campaign. “This is the portrait of fascism, and its demolition is the first step in our struggle,” one protester said.
The group also vowed not to leave the area until the statue’s demolition was fully completed.
No official response from authorities had been reported at the time of this publication.
