Former Shipping Minister and senior Awami League leader Shajahan Khan has expressed his intention to participate in elections if given the chance. He made the remarks while exiting the courtroom following a hearing related to his arrest warrant on Wednesday (May 14).
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Minhazur Rahman approved an application submitted by the investigating officer to officially show Khan as arrested in a case filed by the anti-discrimination student movement at Jatrabari Police Station.
Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, Shajahan Khan made controversial comments, stating, “Yunus is surviving through an illicit alliance with Jamaat. But this relationship won’t last long.”
He also took aim at the press, saying, “Journalists must first gain their freedom. You can neither write nor broadcast freely.”
When a journalist questioned how elections could be held when the party’s activities were banned, Khan responded confidently, “When I get the chance, I will contest the election, Inshallah. Awami League cannot be destroyed—it is like a phoenix.”
Following the hearing, he was escorted back into custody.
It is worth mentioning that Shajahan Khan was arrested in the Dhanmondi area on September 6 last year. Since then, he has been remanded multiple times and remains in jail.
