Seven Senior Politicians Formally Arrested Over July Movement Cases; Ex-Home Secretary Remanded in Protester’s Murder

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the formal arrest of seven senior political figures, including former ministers Anisul Huq, Amir Hossain Amu, Hasanul Haque Inu, Rashed Khan Menon, and three others, in connection with multiple cases tied to the July movement—most involving allegations of murder and attempted murder.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Minhazur Rahman issued the order after reviewing prosecution petitions seeking to show the individuals arrested in seven separate cases. Among them, Anisul Huq was shown arrested in three cases, while Amu, Menon, Inu, and Zunaid face two cases each; Monu in three cases; and Shahjahan in one.

In a separate case, former Home Secretary Jahangir Alam was placed on a two-day remand in connection with the death of protester Mehedi, who was fatally shot during a demonstration near the National Burn Institute on August 5, 2023. The case, officially filed at Bangshal Police Station a month later, accuses Alam of involvement in the incident.

The court denied bail and approved limited remand, despite a five-day request from prosecutors.
