Saudi Arabian officials are engaged in “difficult” negotiations to retain Cristiano Ronaldo in the country, following hints from the football icon that he may be leaving Al Nassr. The talks come after Ronaldo posted “This chapter is over” on social media, sparking speculation about his future.
A source from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which controls Al Nassr, Al Hilal, and Al Ahli, confirmed that discussions are underway to keep the Portuguese star in the Saudi Pro League. Options reportedly include a high-profile transfer to Al Hilal, allowing Ronaldo to feature in the FIFA Club World Cup, or a move to Asian champions Al Ahli.
Ronaldo, 40, joined Al Nassr in early 2023 but has yet to win a domestic or continental title despite being the league’s top scorer with 25 goals. His current contract expires at the end of June. A special transfer window opens from June 1–10 for Club World Cup participants, potentially allowing a late-career move to one of Saudi Arabia’s top clubs.
While Ronaldo previously hinted he could finish his career at Al Nassr, his recent comments and the club’s third-place finish have fueled exit rumors. The PIF source emphasized Ronaldo’s impact on the league, stating, “His presence has opened the door for elite and young players to come to Saudi Arabia.”
FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed that discussions are ongoing for Ronaldo to play in the upcoming Club World Cup, set for June 14 in the U.S. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi, Ronaldo’s longtime rival, is already confirmed to participate with Inter Miami.
Saudi Arabia continues to reshape global football with major investments and star signings as it prepares to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
