World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka began her Wimbledon 2025 campaign with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Grand Slam debutant Carson Branstine in 73 minutes.
Branstine, ranked No.194, entered the match confident, declaring, “I believe I can beat anyone,” but nerves and Sabalenka’s overwhelming power quickly took control. The Canadian struggled early, gifting breaks with unforced errors, but avoided a first-set bagel by holding serve at 1-5, earning warm applause from the crowd.
In the second set, Branstine settled and showcased her big serve and aggressive play, creating break point opportunities against Sabalenka. However, the three-time Grand Slam champion held firm to close out the match, admitting it was a “tough match, tough win,” and expressing joy at returning to Wimbledon after missing last year due to a shoulder injury.
Branstine, who recently defeated top players including Bianca Andreescu and Roland-Garros semi-finalist Lois Boisson in qualifying, gained attention both for her tennis and her part-time modelling career. Despite the loss, her composure and competitive spirit earned praise, while Sabalenka looks ahead to tougher draws as she continues her quest for the Venus Rosewater Dish.
