Putin Meets Akie Abe in Surprise Gesture Amid Strained Russia-Japan Relations

In a rare diplomatic moment, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Akie Abe, the widow of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, at the Kremlin despite heightened tensions between Russia and Japan following the Ukraine war. The Tokyo government stated it had not been informed of her private visit.

During the emotional meeting, Putin praised the late Shinzo Abe as a sincere leader and a key figure in improving Russia-Japan relations, recalling their personal rapport and his 2016 visit to Japan. Akie Abe, visibly moved to tears, expressed hope for continued cultural and humanitarian ties between the two nations, despite the political climate.

She noted her husband’s efforts to build peace and his dream of concluding a treaty between the two countries—something that remains unfulfilled. Putin acknowledged the sentiment but said the current situation was not conducive to such discussions.

The meeting, which included a symbolic gesture of flowers and a presidential limousine ride to the Bolshoi Theater, was widely viewed as an unexpected moment of diplomacy amid frosty bilateral ties.
