Prof Yunus Concludes Japan Visit with Major Economic Gains and Strategic Partnerships

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus returned to Dhaka on Saturday night after a highly productive four-day official visit to Japan. During his trip, Prof Yunus met with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba, where both leaders committed to finalizing an Economic Partnership Agreement in the coming months. Japan also pledged $1.063 billion in budgetary and infrastructure support for Bangladesh, including major loans for economic reform and railway development, and a grant for human development scholarships.

The visit featured the signing of eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), including six focused on economic cooperation and two aimed at enhancing the skills and employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers in Japan. Japanese businesses announced plans to recruit at least 100,000 Bangladeshi workers over the next five years to address local labor shortages.

Prof Yunus also addressed the 30th Nikkei Forum: Future of Asia, met with former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to advocate for Bangladesh’s ASEAN membership, and received an Honorary Doctorate from Soka University in recognition of his global contributions.
