In Sherpur’s Sadar Upazila, widespread allegations of substandard road renovation have emerged after newly carpeted sections of the Mobarakpur road began peeling off by hand in over 40 spots—just days after completion. The project, stretching 3,700 meters from Charsherpur Union Parishad to Mobarakpur, was undertaken by M/s MM Enterprises under the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) at a cost of Tk 2.12 crore.
Despite a completion deadline of April 30, work has progressed slowly and with poor results. Locals report that pitch was poured during rainfall and on water-logged surfaces, violating basic construction norms. With the monsoon season approaching, residents fear the road may collapse entirely.
In response to growing criticism, the contractor filed an extortion case against several locals who questioned the work’s quality, causing panic and forcing some residents to flee the area.
Sherpur LGED Executive Engineer Md. Mostafizur Rahman admitted that carpeting had come off in 35-40 places but claimed initial inspections suggested acceptable quality. He confirmed that samples were sent for lab testing and that further action would depend on the results.
Meanwhile, residents remain frustrated, accusing contractors and authorities of misusing public funds and ignoring accountability. As the controversy deepens, calls for transparency and independent investigation into the project are growing louder.
