PKK to begin disarmament process in Iraq from July 10-12

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) announced that its fighters will begin surrendering their weapons between July 10 and 12 in Sulaymaniyah, within Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region. This follows PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan’s February call to formally disband and disarm the group, ending four decades of conflict with Turkey. Despite being imprisoned since 1999, Ocalan’s influence remains strong among Kurds. A PKK spokesperson said fighters would destroy their weapons under civil society supervision, marking the group’s first practical step towards peace and democratic politics. Turkish officials welcomed the move, with President Erdogan expected to meet pro-Kurdish party members next week to discuss the peace process.
