Pakistan Urges India to Uphold Indus Waters Treaty After Court Ruling

India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty following April’s terrorist attack in Kashmir, which it blamed on Pakistan. However, Pakistan maintains that no party can unilaterally terminate the agreement. On June 27, the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled that it retains jurisdiction over the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric project disputes, reaffirming the treaty’s validity. Pakistan welcomed the ruling, urging India to fully comply and warning that unilateral decisions will not be accepted. The 1960 treaty governs water rights for shared rivers and remains crucial to regional stability.
