Over 200,000 Afghans Leave Pakistan Amid Ongoing Deportation Drive

More than 200,000 Afghan nationals have left Pakistan since April, following the government’s renewed crackdown on undocumented migrants, according to the Interior Ministry. The deportation campaign targets over 800,000 Afghans whose residency permits have been revoked—many of whom were born in or have long resided in Pakistan.

In April alone, over 135,000 Afghans exited the country, with 67,000 more following in May. The first two days of June saw more than 3,000 deportations. Since the crackdown began in 2023, over 1 million Afghans have fled Pakistan amid fears of arrest and harassment.

Mounting internal security threats, including increased militant attacks and economic strain, have fueled public support for the expulsions, particularly in border areas battling insurgencies by the Pakistani Taliban and other groups.
