Online Tax Return Filing Surges with 1.7 Million Submissions in FY2024-25

More than 1.7 million taxpayers submitted their income tax returns online in the fiscal year 2024-25, marking significant progress in digital tax compliance, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR). In a press release on Monday, NBR reported that 1,712,492 taxpayers filed returns online, while 2,165,321 taxpayers registered for e-returns during the year.

The NBR hailed this as a “landmark step” under its automation programme aimed at making tax services more accessible and efficient. The simplified system has encouraged more voluntary submissions, with taxpayers also able to revise returns online within 180 days under Section 180 of the Income Tax Act, 2023. The NBR thanked taxpayers for adopting digital services and urged continued use of its year-round online return filing and certificate collection facilities.
