Nurul Kabir Criticizes Dr. Yunus-Led Efforts on Rohingya Issue, Citing Lack of Political and Geopolitical Depth

Nurul Kabir, editor of New Age, has stated that Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus cannot resolve the complex Myanmar and Rohingya crisis alone, despite his integrity and patriotism. Speaking on a recent television talk show, Kabir argued that the Rakhine issue has grown far beyond regional boundaries and is now a hotspot for conflicting global interests—including those of the U.S., China, India, and Myanmar itself.

Kabir stressed that effective solutions cannot come solely from isolated individuals or technocratic circles, no matter how well-intentioned. He criticized what he described as a lack of consultation with essential actors, including the military leadership, political parties, and experts in regional geopolitics. “National security isn’t just a diplomatic topic—it involves real-world military preparedness. If war breaks out, it’s the Army that must respond,” he said.

He further accused the current leadership circle around Dr. Yunus of operating in secrecy and avoiding public accountability, while resisting calls for democratic transition. According to Kabir, the group lacks class and political diversity, drawing primarily from NGO circles that, in his view, hold a misguided belief that social change can occur through depoliticized means.

“This group is detached from the people and unaware of how domestic and international politics truly work,” Kabir warned. He concluded that unless all relevant stakeholders are brought into the discussion—including those who will deal with the aftermath in power—Bangladesh risks entering a phase of dangerous instability. He cautioned that the current approach could lead to the erosion of public respect for the government and those involved in its decision-making.
