New LNG Cargo Begins Unloading at Maheshkhali FSRU Terminal as Bangladesh Ramps Up Gas Supply

Gas has begun to be unloaded from a new LNG cargo at Accelerate Energy’s floating LNG terminal in Maheshkhali. The cargo arrived on board the LNG carrier “Wen Cheng” and was purchased from BP Singapore through the spot market. The first connection of the terminal with the ship was established at 8:54 am on Friday, October 2, after which the process of transferring LNG from the ship to the terminal began. This marks another step in Bangladesh’s efforts to secure LNG supplies from diverse sources and maintain adequate gas flow to the national grid.

Earlier in September, several LNG cargoes from various sources arrived in the country. Among them, LNG was purchased from the spot market through Ganvoor from the United States, Total Energy from Indonesia, and Aramco Singapore from Australia. The latest cargo from BP Singapore adds to the list of spot market purchases and reflects the government’s strategy of sourcing LNG from multiple suppliers to meet demand. Meanwhile, as of 2 pm on October 1, the total gas supply in the country was 2,625 million cubic feet. Of this, domestic gas supply was 1,610 million cubic feet, while imported LNG supplied 1,150 million cubic feet. The figures show that imported LNG continues to play a significant role in meeting the country’s gas demand, complementing domestic production.

Petrobangla said that a total of 19 cargoes of LNG have been confirmed for import into the country in October and November. Of these, 10 cargoes are scheduled to arrive in October and 9 in November. These cargoes have been purchased from various countries, including the United States, Nigeria and Angola. The confirmation of 19 cargoes for the next two months is intended to ensure that there is no shortage of gas supply from LNG to the national grid, and it reflects the government’s efforts to secure supplies on a rolling basis. The unloading at the Maheshkhali FSRU is part of the ongoing process of receiving and regasifying LNG, which is then supplied to the national gas grid through pipelines. The arrival of the “Wen Cheng” and the start of unloading operations demonstrate the continued operation of the floating terminal and the importance of imported LNG in the country’s energy mix. With 19 cargoes confirmed for October and November, the authorities are working to maintain a stable supply of gas for households, industries and power generation, even as they continue to monitor global market conditions and shipping logistics.
