Shubman Gill, newly appointed captain of India’s Test team, managed just 13 runs in his first IPL match since the announcement, during Gujarat Titans’ game against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. The 25-year-old was named as Rohit Sharma’s successor a day earlier for the upcoming five-Test series in England starting June 20.
Playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which will also host the IPL final on June 3, Gill struck a four and a six in his brief nine-ball innings before being caught at slip off medium-pacer Anshul Kamboj. Despite the short stay, Gill expressed enthusiasm about leading the national side, calling it an “exciting challenge.”
He now faces the task of leading a Test team adjusting to the sudden retirements of Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who both stepped away from the longer format earlier this month.
