Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, Professor Ali Riaz, stated on Thursday that the commission is working to develop a national charter that gives structured form to the aspirations voiced during the July–August 2024 mass uprising. Speaking at a dialogue with Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) in Dhaka, he emphasized the goal of ensuring that all political parties can contribute to realizing the public’s demands for justice, equality, and democratic rights.
“We aim to reflect the spirit of national consensus in a charter so that every political force has a role in shaping the country’s future,” Prof. Riaz said.
The dialogue was attended by commission members Justice Md Emdadul Haque, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Safar Raj Hossain, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, and Dr. Md Ayub Miah, along with Monir Haider, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser. An 11-member BSD delegation led by General Secretary Bazlur Rashid Firoz joined the discussion at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Prof. Riaz noted that the country’s current political momentum stems from decades of struggle and public demand for systemic change. “The people of Bangladesh are tired of fascist tendencies. They want a nation where equality, rights, and respect for diverse opinions are foundational,” he said.
He added that the July–August uprising reflected both widespread frustration and the long-suppressed hopes of the public. The commission, he stressed, is engaging with political parties based on recommendations from earlier reform initiatives to foster unity and drive meaningful transformation.
“This mission isn’t ours alone,” he concluded. “Political parties must lead by embracing the people’s voice and taking bold steps forward.”
