A murder case has been filed following the deaths of Saudi expatriate Monir Hessen, his wife Nasrin Akhter Swapna, and their son Arafat, whose bodies were recovered from a hotel in Dhaka’s Moghbazar on Sunday. Monir’s brother, Nurul Amin, filed the case at Ramna Police Station on Tuesday, leading to the arrest of their cousin Rafiqul Islam.
Post-mortem reports suggested food poisoning as the cause of death, with no injury marks found. According to the complaint, a property dispute had arisen between Monir and Rafiqul, who managed Monir’s land and houses in Bangladesh. On June 28, Rafiqul brought food to the family at the hotel before leaving for his home. Later, Monir and his family fell ill and were declared dead at Ad-Din Hospital.
Samples have been sent to Mohakhali Chemical Laboratory to confirm if poisoning caused their deaths. Police continue to investigate the suspected murder over property and financial disputes.
