Microsoft has announced plans to lay off 9,000 employees, approximately 4% of its global workforce, as part of a restructuring strategy to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) more effectively into its operations and enhance efficiency. The decision follows an earlier round of 6,000 layoffs in May 2025.
The company said the move is necessary to adapt to the rapidly evolving market and technological landscape. With a current global workforce of 228,000, Microsoft aims to reduce management layers and create an environment where employees can work more creatively and productively using AI technologies.
Analysts attribute the layoffs to Microsoft’s significant AI investments, including its partnership with OpenAI and generative AI advancements such as ChatGPT, which have increased infrastructure costs. The company assured affected employees of severance packages, health insurance, and career counseling support.
Industry experts note that Microsoft’s decision aligns with a broader trend among tech giants like Google, Meta, and Amazon, which are also reducing headcounts to focus on AI, automation, and cost management amid shifting global market demands.
