Meta Unveils Ray-Ban Display Smart Glasses, Betting on AI-Powered Future Despite Losses

Meta introduced its latest line of smart glasses, the Ray-Ban Display, at its annual developers conference on Wednesday, advancing its push to merge the physical and digital worlds.

Priced at $799, the new glasses feature built-in displays for viewing messages and photos directly in the user’s line of sight, alongside “neural bands” — sensor-equipped bracelets that allow gesture-based control. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described them as the company’s most advanced AI glasses yet, positioning them as the next major computing platform that could one day replace smartphones.

Despite Reality Labs posting a $4.5 billion loss in Q2, Meta is doubling down on its long-term metaverse vision, where AI-driven smart glasses play a central role. Analysts note profitability is unlikely soon, but the move reflects Meta’s bid to break free from reliance on Apple and Google’s smartphone ecosystems.

In addition to the flagship model, Meta unveiled updated Ray-Ban Meta glasses starting at $379 and the Oakley Meta Vanguard, designed for athletes, priced at $499. These models include action-ready cameras, immersive audio, fitness app integration, and real-time translation.

Meta claims its Ray-Ban smart glasses are already the top-selling AI glasses worldwide, with millions of units sold. The global smart glasses market, valued at $2 billion today, is expected to surpass $8 billion annually by 2030.
