Meta Restructures AI Division, Launches Meta Superintelligence Lab to Lead Global AI Race

Meta has announced a major restructuring of its AI division to strengthen its position in the global artificial intelligence competition. In an internal message released on Monday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the formation of the Meta Superintelligence Lab (MSL), which will focus on developing next-generation AI models and superintelligence.

The new unit brings together 11 top researchers and engineers from AI leaders such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Key hires include former DeepMind researchers Jack Ray and Pei Sun, OpenAI’s Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Biu, Shengjia Zhao, and Hongyu Ren, as well as Anthropic’s Joel Pober, who previously spent over a decade at Meta. MSL will be led by Alexander Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, as chief AI officer, while former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman will oversee AI product development and applied research.

Zuckerberg emphasized that AI advancements are accelerating rapidly, bringing superintelligence within reach and opening a new era for humanity. He warned that while some companies may be overinvesting, the cost of falling behind in this technological race over the next 10 to 15 years is too great.

MSL will consolidate Meta’s Large Language Model team, AI Product Development team, and Fundamental Research (FAIR) team, while establishing a dedicated lab for next-generation AI models. Meta continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure, data centers, chips, and talent, recently spending $14.3 billion to acquire Scale AI and engaging with companies like Perplexity AI and Runway AI for strategic deals.

Zuckerberg’s personal involvement in recruitment includes inviting top AI talent to his homes and offering multi-million-dollar share packages. This push comes as Meta’s stock price reached an all-time high of $47.90 early Monday, underscoring market confidence in its aggressive AI strategy.
