With the holy Hajj set to begin on Wednesday, June 4, Saudi Arabia is completing final preparations in Mecca to welcome over two million pilgrims from around the world. The Kingdom has deployed cutting-edge technology, transportation upgrades, and expanded medical and security services to ensure a safe and seamless pilgrimage experience.
According to Arab News, pilgrims have already arrived on 3,314 flights from 71 countries. A specialized metro system, known as the Sacred Sites Train Line, will make 4,900 trips over seven days on the Al-Muqaddasa metro line to transport worshippers between key religious sites.
Saleh Al Jawaid, spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, announced that this year’s transport system has seen a 75% increase in Haramain High-Speed Railway trips compared to last year. Additionally, 25,000 buses will operate with advanced inspections to ensure safety. Artificial intelligence is playing a crucial role, with 7,400 kilometers of roads being scanned using AI-enabled systems and drones for enhanced monitoring and traffic control.
Digital infrastructure has also received a major boost. Sa’d Al-Shanbari, spokesperson for the Hajj Communications and Technology Department, reported that 4G and 5G coverage has been expanded to 99% across Mecca, Medina, and other sacred sites. Over 10,500 WiFi hotspots have been installed to improve connectivity for pilgrims.
These extensive last-minute efforts reflect Saudi Arabia’s commitment to using modern technology and logistical efficiency to support one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, ensuring a safe and spiritually fulfilling journey for all participants.
