Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamed Hassan strongly condemned the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza, calling it an act of “barbarity” and a reflection of global “indifference and hypocrisy” toward Palestinian suffering, AFP reported.
Speaking ahead of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, which begins Monday, Hassan stated, “These atrocities are a direct result of violations of international law,” and insisted that ASEAN must not remain silent.
Malaysia, which currently chairs ASEAN, has consistently expressed strong support for Palestinian rights and has no diplomatic relations with Israel. The country has already contributed over $10 million in aid to Gaza since the war erupted in October 2023.
Hassan’s remarks come amid renewed Israeli offensives and growing international criticism, as humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate despite a partial easing of Israel’s blockade imposed in March.
Reaffirming Malaysia’s position, Hassan called on ASEAN member states to uphold their February pledge of unwavering support for Palestine and to take a more active stance in response to the worsening crisis.
