Madison Keys defeated Olga Danilovic in the second round at Wimbledon with a confident performance, a welcome relief after narrowly escaping an upset in her first-round three-set battle against Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Reflecting on her journey, Keys shared how important it is to see herself as more than just a tennis player, especially after tough periods on tour.
Last year, Keys’ Wimbledon run ended painfully when she tore her hamstring mid-serve in a thriller against Jasmine Paolini, forcing her to retire in tears. However, her year turned around with a joyful wedding to longtime partner and coach Bjorn Fratangelo and an impressive Australian Open campaign, where she defeated world No.1 Iga Swiatek and No.2 Aryna Sabalenka, becoming the first player to do so at a Slam since 2009.
Now aiming to match Serena Williams’ feat of winning both the Australian Open and Wimbledon in the same year, Keys emphasized the importance of mental health on tour. Her recipe for staying grounded? “Have a really great support system and stay off Twitter,” she smiled.
