Liverpool’s Diogo Jota Dies in Car Accident at 28, Days After Wedding

Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, Liverpool’s forward, has tragically died in a car accident at just 28 years old. The accident occurred on Thursday morning (July 3) when Jota, driving with his brother Andre, lost control of the car on the A-52 highway in Zamora, Spain. The vehicle veered off the road, caught fire, and both brothers died on the spot.

This tragedy comes just 10 days after Jota married his longtime girlfriend, Ruth Cardoso, with whom he had three children. Their recent wedding photos have now become memories for their grieving family.

The Portuguese Football Federation expressed deep condolences, calling his passing an “irreparable loss to Portuguese football.” They stated, “More than a great player, Diogo Jota was a great man respected by teammates and opponents alike. We have lost two champions.”

Jota began his professional career at Pacos de Ferreira in 2014 before moving to Atletico Madrid, where he was loaned to Porto and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He later joined Wolverhampton permanently in 2018 before transferring to Liverpool, where he won the Premier League and the FA Cup. He also secured two Nations League titles with Portugal, leaving behind a legacy as one of his country’s brightest football talents.
