Liverpool Retires Diogo Jota’s No. 20 Jersey in Emotional Tribute After Tragic Death

Liverpool Football Club has announced it will permanently retire Diogo Jota’s iconic no. 20 jersey following the Portuguese forward’s tragic death in a car accident in Spain’s Zamora province on Thursday. The 28-year-old, who was part of Liverpool’s 2024–25 Premier League-winning squad and a UEFA Nations League champion with Portugal, died alongside his brother, André Silva.

Liverpool confirmed that no player will wear the no. 20 shirt again, honouring Jota’s contributions to the club. The tribute holds added symbolism, coinciding with Liverpool’s 20th league title this season. While FIFA regulations prevent national teams from retiring numbers 1–23, clubs are permitted to do so under UEFA rules.

Jota’s sudden passing has left teammates and fans devastated, with Liverpool’s gesture standing as a permanent reminder of his enduring legacy both on and off the pitch.
