A deadly landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall buried four members of a family in Bakhtiar Ghat village, Golapganj upazila of Sylhet early Sunday morning, June 1. The incident occurred around 2:45 AM while the family was asleep in their semi-pucca home. The bodies of a woman and two children have been recovered, while rescue efforts continue to locate one remaining person, believed to be Md. Iaz Uddin.
Local residents initially tried to rescue the victims but were unsuccessful due to the severity of the collapse. Fire service teams, delayed by blocked roads and fallen trees caused by the storm, reached the site around 4:30 AM. The ongoing heavy rain and unstable terrain have made rescue efforts dangerous and difficult.
Laxnaband Union Chairman Md. Khalku and police officials described the night as tragic, with additional landslides reported in Chowdhury Bazar and Beanibazar, though no casualties occurred there. Authorities continue to clear access routes as the region braces for more rain and potential landslide threats.
