Lady Gaga says the idea that kindness is a “free currency” comes directly from her upbringing in a tight-knit, working-class Italian American neighborhood where people “showed up for each other” regardless of differences. She credits her parents for instilling those values early and says she carries that sense of community with her despite global fame.
Gaga believes that kindness is not weakness but courage—especially in uncertain times. That philosophy became the basis for the Born This Way Foundation, which she co-founded in 2012 to support the mental well-being of young people and promote a kinder, braver world.
She also shared that her personal life has helped her feel more grounded, previously noting that her relationship with fiancé Michael Polansky helped her feel like a “healthy, whole person” by focusing on who she is beyond her public persona.
For Gaga, kindness isn’t just a belief—it’s a daily practice shaped by family, community, and a commitment to helping others feel seen and valued.
