Jack Draper delivered a commanding performance in his Wimbledon opener, defeating Argentina’s Sebastian Baez 6-2, 6-2, 2-1 before Baez retired with a knee injury. Draper, the No.4 seed, overwhelmed Baez with powerful serves reaching 136 mph and aggressive forehands, giving his opponent no chance to challenge. Despite wishing for a longer match to settle into his game, Draper expressed satisfaction with his form and wished Baez a speedy recovery.
Baez, on a six-match losing streak and with limited grass-court experience, struggled throughout, slipping and injuring his knee early in the second set. After treatment, he continued briefly before retiring at the start of the third set. Draper’s confident win sets up a second-round match against veteran Marin Cilic, marking an early statement from Britain’s new tennis hope in his quest for Wimbledon success.
