Indian cricket is poised to enter a transitional phase as selectors prepare to announce a Test squad for the upcoming England series without modern legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the first time in over a decade. Both stars announced their retirement from Test cricket within the past week, following the earlier exit of veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
Shubman Gill, 25, is the frontrunner to lead the side, despite modest overseas performances, and is expected to open alongside 23-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal. Shreyas Iyer is likely to slot into Kohli’s former position at No. 4, with rising talents like Sarfaraz Khan, Rajat Patidar, and Dhruv Jurel in contention for middle-order roles.
While Jasprit Bumrah has led in Tests before, his recent return from injury and the demanding schedule of five Tests in six weeks make him an unlikely captaincy choice. Rishabh Pant, another possible successor, faces scrutiny over form and leadership in the IPL.
Veteran journalist Ayaz Memon noted that while Kohli’s retirement marks a “big moment” in Indian cricket, the squad has enough depth with players like Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, and Washington Sundar to navigate the rebuilding phase and remain competitive on the global stage.
