IGP Baharul Alam Reaffirms Commitment to Non-Lethal Policing

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has reiterated the Bangladesh Police’s commitment to non-lethal law enforcement, emphasizing that the force must not be viewed as a “killer force.”

Speaking to the media on Tuesday after the IGP Cup Cricket Tournament final at the Police Staff College ground in Mirpur, the IGP stressed the importance of minimizing the use of deadly weapons in everyday policing. “We must avoid using firearms that cause certain death, such as rifles with lethal rounds,” he said. “This aligns with public expectations—people do not want a police force that kills.”

He noted that the policy on weapon use will be refined through further consultations but affirmed a clear shift toward internationally accepted non-lethal alternatives. “In routine duties, lethal arms should be avoided. A shotgun may be carried for defense, but even that reflects public sentiment,” he added.

While acknowledging that some exceptional circumstances—such as conflict-prone zones—might require different tactical measures, the IGP underscored that daily operations should prioritize peace and safety with minimal harm.

The event, aimed at promoting sportsmanship within the force, was attended by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed and senior police officials. IGP Baharul Alam concluded the ceremony by awarding trophies to the tournament’s champion and runner-up teams.
