ICT Issues Arrest Warrants Against 26 Including Former BRU VC in Abu Sayed Killing Case

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) on Monday issued arrest warrants against 26 individuals, including former Begum Rokeya University (BRU) vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Hasibur Rashid, in a crimes against humanity case related to the killing of student Abu Sayed during the July-August Mass Uprising.

The three-member ICT-2 panel, led by Justice Md Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, passed the order after formally taking into cognizance the charges submitted by the prosecution. The court adjourned the case hearing until July 10.

Earlier in the day, Senior Prosecutor Mizanul Islam filed the formal charge against 30 accused, including a former commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, following the investigation agency’s probe report filed on June 24.

According to the prosecution, prior to Abu Sayed’s killing on July 16, 2024, proctor Shariful Islam along with Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists attacked university students, forcing them off campus. Two policemen then shot Sayed at close range.

Previously, the tribunal granted permission to interrogate four arrested individuals in June, including former police personnel and BCL leaders. The victim’s family filed the complaint against 25 people in January this year. The court’s decision marks a major step forward in pursuing justice for the killing during last year’s mass uprising.
