The ancestral home of Tamim Hawlader, one of the suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Dhaka University student and Chhatra Dal leader SM Shahriar Alam Sammo, was set ablaze on Wednesday night in Brahmandi village, Madaripur Sadar upazila. The fire destroyed the main house, kitchen, and two adjoining rooms before firefighters brought it under control.
The cause of the fire and those responsible remain unconfirmed. Tamim, along with co-accused Palash Sardar and Samrat Mallik—all from Madaripur—were reportedly involved in criminal activities under the protection of local political leaders. Locals claim the suspects were known for extortion and drug-related offenses.
Tensions escalated in the village following their arrests in the high-profile murder case. Police have launched an investigation into the arson, with Additional Superintendent of Police Chatak Chakma assuring that appropriate action will follow.
